Re: am I too old?
I'm 69 years old, and I earned my TEFL certification in March 2022. I've been tutoring the Iranian grad student whom I started tutoring during my required practicum. The school I attended online, the International TEFL Academy, in Chicago, Illinois, suggested that I look at Central American and Sout...

Re: Age restrictions
KDammers mentioned mandatory retirement ages in Germany. I wonder, though, if it would be possible to work as a freelancer in Germany. That might well be one way to get around the mandatory retirement age. As long as you had a number of clients, you could probably privately teach or tutor EFL in Ger...

Re: Age restrictions
The TEFL school I attended, the International TEFL Academy in Chicago, Illinois, advised me to look at positions in Mexico, Central America, and South America. In these countries, older teachers are preferred. Also Russia, Romania, the Czech Republic are other places where older teachers are preferr...

Re: Online A Level recommendation.
Ed, best of luck to you! It's such a pity that educational requirements that work in one country don't work in another. And I'm so sorry that the course you have to take provides teachers who take such a long time to respond to you. That is seriously unprofessional. I was so fortunate in that my teac...

Re: Online A Level recommendation.
I am in the US, so I know nothing about the UK system of TEFL training. I studied for and received my TEFL certificate through the online program of the International TEFL Academy in Chicago, Illinois, US. (They also have an in-person program, but I live very, very far from Chicago, so that was not ...

Re: Online learning discussion
Something I forgot: Yes, I have always had to work AND study for all my degrees (my bachelor's degree, two master's degrees, and a law degree). Work and study are not incompatible. If a student feels that they are, then he or she should not be working and studying. Pick one. Pick neither. But cheati...

Re: Online learning discussion
OMG! I just looked at the "buy an assignment" website. I guess I must be naive, but I'm shocked. I've certainly heard of people hiring others to write papers for them--I've been approached to do so in my capacity as a freelance editor/proofreader/translator/writer, but I refuse--but I had ...

Re: Have teaching experience...would online cert do??
I earned my certificate in TEFL online through the International TEFL Academy in Chicago, Illinois. It was indeed a rigorous course, and I learned a lot. Before I settled on ITA, I researched a lot of TEFL courses. There's even an in-person one where I live through a local university. But those who'...

Re: Emotional Factors within TEFL and how to deal with them
Your post made me feel your utter exhaustion. I know that I could not deal with a schedule like yours. It takes me far too long to write lesson plans. I hope that, as I become more experienced, I'll be able to do this more quickly. I've decided that I will not work with children in a school/classroo...

Re: am I too old?
I am 68, and yes, indeed, there ARE opportunities for older teachers. Many countries prefer older teachers. Be sure to look at Central and South American countries, many of which prefer having older teachers. The Czech Republic, Romania, and Russia are also good countries in which older teachers can...

Re: How do you feel about online tutoring?
I too have seen online tutoring jobs that pay atrociously. I haven't yet seen one that pays $6 per hour, which is totally ridiculous. I have seen ones that pay $9 per hour, and that too, in my opinion, is also absurd. I didn't go into TEFL to get rich. I knew that I wouldn't. I've been a freelance e...

How about calling yourself an English-language tutor? I think that would cover many categories. Let us know what you decide to do.

Re: How do you feel about online tutoring?
I've finished my TEFL course, and now I'm working on my practicum. My student is a graduate student in engineering at a local university, and his English is in the advanced category. I've been working with him online because of his class schedule. That worked out very well, I think. He absorbs every...

Your experience in Naples sounds utterly horrific. I'm amazed that you were able to complete your teaching arrangement without storming out in disgust. Thank you for warning us about this school.

Re: Use extreme caution BEFORE you send or upload your resume.
In the TEFL course I'm taking, we had a webinar on how to write resumes when applying for jobs abroad. We were told that it was a MUST to include your date of birth. I felt pretty skeptical about that. I'm an older teacher-to-be (I've taught German before but not EFL/ESL), and I do not want to be au...

Re: Best online TEFL course?
I did a lot of research on TEFL courses before I picked the one that I did. I don't believe that all online TEFL courses should be avoided and that only university programs are good. A large, accredited, brick-and-mortar university where I live (I don't know if I should mention its name, lest I open...
