I don't directly address the phonemic alphabet, but I play a minimal pairs game to help students identify and distinguish between troublesome sounds.

I finally decided to go with Empower for my next class. I took in a selection of possible books and they thought it looked the most suitable.

I think the book Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener is a very accessible overview of current EFL thinking with lots of practical examples. I found it to be a bit more readable than Jeremy Harmer's book.

I find puzzlefast.com relatively straightforward and for creating half crosswords (for a very nice speaking activity) halfacrossword.com

In Company starts at Elementary and is mostly pretty decent for a Business English book, I haven't used the Elementary edition but the later levels have a lexis focused approach.

Good question, I have been teaching a group of 70+ seniors for a few years now and have cherry picked my way through several books. I found that Headway (B1 and B1+) was the most appropriate for them, I'm looking at Innovations and Global as possible next options.

My experience at Berlitz was that most teachers had nor prior qualifications and then took part in a four or five day workshop. There was no further training.

What are they interested in? Upper Intermediate students should be able to cope with a lot of real-world texts, find something interesting and use that as a basis for your lesson.

I almost never read them but I collect some of them because they often contain useful photocopiable activities. Headway, Cutting Edge, Speakout all have pretty good teacher's resources in the back of the book.
