There is a useful article here on teaching Private Lessons which may help. And yes, you should get some kind of qualification if you are going to teach!

Re: WOULD I BE ABLE TO GET A TEACHING JOB?
You might find this article useful - it's about getting work without a degree. Essentially you need to make yourself as employable as possible. That means a) looking the part - well dressed, polite, and so on b) having at least some qualification to teach As for getting the job, well it's unlikely t...

Re: Advice sought
Although not impossible to overcome, your biggest problem is likely to be the visa issue. If you want to work in an EU country then you'll need a passport from an EU country. There are ways around this though but you'll need to be there in person and get a job on a tourist visa and see if the school...

Re: TEFL as a couple? Very worried.
It depends where you want to go. The basic qualifications for many entry level jobs is a degree and a TEFL certificate and this should be fine. Essentially although you are likely to find work in the same town or city (as long as it's big enough) I'd recommend not trying to find work in the same sch...

Re: Teaching in Indonesia
In general you'll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work. The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house at a local school for 4 weeks or online at your own pace which is...

Take it right down. I was in a similar position once with one particular class so I went right back to basics. It worked as well.

Re: TESOL in Portugal
Funnily enough I was in Lisbon a few weeks ago talking to some TEFL people - fantastic city and great food! But to jobs... most jobs are found through either local advertisements or word of mouth. The start of the school year is the best time to find work there so that means at the end of Summer (al...

Re: Newbie looking for first country to start
Ok, regarding the degree then you're limiting your options. The countries most touted as ones suitable for work without a degree are China and Taiwan but you usually have to be there in person to get the work.

Re: Is it possible to work in Europe without an EU passport.
Although it's not impossible, it is much harder to find work in Europe if you don't have a passport from an EU member state. Most schools will simply not have the time nor inclination to go through the hoops to sort out the visa issue. Another problem is that in some cases your visa will be tied to ...

Re: Teaching in the Middle East
Regarding qualifications, it depends where. As a rule, the higher paying countries ( Saudi , etc) are looking for more qualifications and a few years' experience as well whereas Egypt is less strict and a degree + TEFL cert is fine in many cases. Again, there are many differences in lifestyle and ex...

It depends where. We have lots of graduates finding work so yes, you can find work with online certificates. They are generally entry-level or first jobs but by no means always so.

Re: Indonesia. China no degree.
You can work in parts of China and Taiwan without a degree and also in some other Asian countries. To get work you really need to be there in person as most schools advertising online will ask for the normal full qualifications (i.e. degree + tefl cert). In China many of the non-degree jobs tend to ...

Personally I don't believe you should pay ANY placement agency to find teaching work. They are usually paid by the schools rather than the teachers.

Take a look at Taiwan and China. You may have to be there in person to pick up work as most schools advertising online will only look at fully qualified teachers.

As a couple it's fine. Lots of couples do it.
My only comment would be to try and avoid teaching in the same school. If you have problems with the boss or the pay is late, you'll both be in difficulties but if you work in different schools at least one of you will be ok! :)

Re: employment chances, no degree, non native
You will be limited but it's by no means impossible. You will have to look around in places like China and Taiwan and in the less sought after cities and regions where schools are willing to accept teachers without a degree. This being the case, if you are there in person you'll be more likely to fi...
