Assignment Help: Reading for Gist

Unread post by RobinM »

Hi guys, hope you're all well. I'm completing my 300 hour TEFL course currently but I'm stuck. I'm on my third assignment, teaching the 4 skills and I chose reading. I chose a recipe as my authentic material (see below) and submitted my lesson plan with great feedback in all areas but one. Apparently my reading for gist activity that I chose is not sufficient enough to show that the students can read for gist. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for me because I'm hitting a blank. I did a ton of research on activities but the one I went with apparently wasn't right. Please help! Feeling so stuck!

Zingy teriyaki beef skewers

Prep: 20 mins
Cook: 25 mins
plus marinating

Easy Serves 2
Ingredients
1 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
3 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
15g chunk ginger, peeled and very finely grated
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tsp honey (preferably raw)
¼ tsp chilli flakes
300g beef sirloin steak, trimmed of hard fat and cut into long, thin strips

For the salad
100g long-grain brown rice
⅓ cucumber, cut into small cubes
2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced into ribbons with a peeler
4 spring onions, trimmed and diagonally sliced
100g radishes, trimmed and sliced
20g coriander, leaves roughly chopped, plus extra to garnish
10g mint leaves, plus extra to garnish
1 tbsp cold-pressed rapeseed oil
zest and juice 1 lime
25g unsalted cashew nuts, toasted and roughly chopped

Method
Step 1 Put the tamari, orange juice, ginger, garlic, honey and chilli flakes
in a small saucepan with 100ml cold water and bring to the boil.
Cook for 3-5 mins, boiling hard until well reduced, glossy and
slightly syrupy. Remove from the heat, pour into a shallow dish
and leave to cool.

Step 2 Thread the beef onto 4 soaked wooden or metal skewers. Place in
the marinade, turn and brush until well coated. Cover with cling
film and marinate for 30 mins.

Step 3 While the beef is marinating, prepare the salad. Half-fill a medium
pan with water and bring to the boil. Cook the rice for about 20
mins or following pack instructions until tender. Rinse in a sieve
under running water until cold, then drain well. Tip into a large
bowl.

Step 4 Add the cucumber, carrots, spring onions, radishes, coriander,
mint, oil, lime zest and juice, and toss well together well. Season
with a little black pepper. Divide between two plates and top with
a sprinkling of nuts and extra herbs to garnish.

Step 5 Heat the grill to high. (You could also cook the skewers on a nonstick griddle pan.)
Put the skewers on a rack above a foil-lined
baking tray, reserving any excess marinade. Grill the skewers
close to the heat for 3-5 mins each side or until done to your
liking. Brush with more marinade when they are turned. They
should look sticky and glossy when cooked. Serve hot or cold
with the rice salad.

Do you have a specific question? If so, please ask it.

At the moment the only advice I can offer is not to format your text such that it is screwed up and makes it difficult for viewers to read, at least on phone.

The first para is fine. All the rest is screwed up on phone, probably because you copied and pasted it.

That's my bad, I can't see what format it comes up like on the phone. My question is this. Does anyone have any ideas for a good reading for gist activity that pertains to a recipe?

If you turned your phone sideways you’d see that it comes up jagged, unlike the first paragraph.

If you’re looking for help you’d do best to make things as readable as possible.

It may explain why no-one has answered your question.

I could be wrong.

Wow. Now there's an idea. Turn your phone sideways to check. Who'd a thunk?

It's almost like double-checking your work before handing it in.

Your activity (menu) is basically a list. Reading for gist normally entails reading paragraphs of solid text.

Not sure why it has to pertain to a recipe but perhaps you want something like this?

Hi,nrega job card list
Your initial paragraph is well-formatted and easy to read on a phone, but the subsequent text appears distorted, likely due to a copy-paste issue. Please ensure proper formatting for improved mobile readability.
