UPDATE: Because of all the strict COVID restrictions, less than 10,000 foreign teachers remain in China today

First came the crack down on fake teachers with fake diplomas (2018). Then in 2020 COVID hit while half of the Laowai teachers were back home for the Christmas holidays and locked out of China. Then in 2021 all the foreign-owned chains were booted out of China, and now the mass lock-downs and COVID restrictions sent another 20,000 foreign teachers packing. Those remaining, mostly outside of Beijing and Shanghai now number roughly 10,000 according to SAFEA and the CFTU. Many went to Korea and Japan.

I never left and lately I noticed a lot of new foreign faces who sneaked into China through Mongolia or Vietnam working with fake documents. Boy, when they get caught, are they in for a most unpleasant surprise!
