Re: Does age matter in getting a job?
It's tougher when you are over 60, but you have a background in education, if not TESOL. I think you have a chance, but you will need to send out more enquiries and applications.

Re: which laptop for tefl?
It doesn't really matter for 'TEFL purposes' but I'd recommend Apple; especially if you have an Apple store nearby and can take advantage of their one to one tutorials.

Start by giving them a lot of practice in the class and for homework.

Re: Selling TEFL Concept
I think you need more levels than this. Will you be using a book? If so study the book. You will need much more than 20 hours of study for most books/levels. One course may be 3 or 4 hours a week for 3 months - for example. Usually it takes an academic year to complete one level. However, it really ...

Re: Any good books about TEFL and TEFL training?
One of my favorite introductory TESOL books is Practical Techniques for language teaching by Michael Lewis & Jimmie Hill. Most of Penny Ur's books are good: Discussions that Work and Grammar Practice Activities are very good.

Re: TEFL job at camp next summer ~ am I dreaming?
You have an unusual notion of enjoyment, but the best 4 week TEFL courses are the CELTA and the Trinity CertTESOL. These two are the most [or often only] recognized certificate courses - and the most expensive. They are externally validated and include more practical teaching hours than other course...

Re: CRB checks for TEFL jobs in Asia
This depends on where you want to work in Asia. Every country has a different requirement. Korea & China require a criminal background check. In Korea the employers expect you to do this yourself. I don't quite understand how this can work for UK citizens, when they are not allowed to apply for ...

Re: Is February too late to look for jobs?
It's not too late, but it's a lot tougher to find work then. Be prepared to send your C.V. and a cover letter to lots of schools, and call them later to see if they have any vacancies. Make sure you have savings to live for the first few months at least. Start looking for private students as soon as...

Re: Help! Teaching large classes in China
It's not possible to give a comprehensive answer here, but it sounds like you need to learn how to give conversation/discussion classes. If the students are shy, even if they aren't with those numbers, you will need to devise tasks for them and divide them into pair or small groups. You won't be abl...

Re: What do people do after retiring from ESL teaching?
Lots of people only teach English for a year or two, but people who spend much longer teaching - like me - often end up managing language schools or training teachers. I had my own chain of language schools which I've now sold. I've also been involved in writing EFL coursebooks, and other tefl relat...

I used to hire English teachers, and it was fairly easy to spot the fake degrees; and even if you don't spot them, you can check later with the universities.

Re: newly CELTA qualified needs your opinion
Sebbo - I think your lack of a degree [and lack of experience] would make it more difficult. As would not being a native speaker, which many countries require. You make quite a few spelling mistakes in your post, and any employer reading a letter like this would be unlikely to hire you. However, it ...

Re: Dual nationality: Canadian and Dutch
The market for English teaching jobs in the Netherlands is very small. Most people learn English at school, and learn they very well. In other parts of Europe - for example France - you may have a better chance of finding work. I don't know which websites you read, but 30 euros an hour is not common...

I don't have any experience of Gibraltar, but I've worked in enough countries to know that if you are really determined, you will most likely be able to find something, especially if you specialize in teaching young children. The competition is likely to be tough, so take enough funds to live for th...

Re: Teaching English without degree, with TEFL certificate.
Keep working towards your degree. This will help you in the future, but for now you will have a harder situation; perhaps. Most parts of the world prefer teachers to have a degree, of course. Some places don't insist, but you will usually have a choice of the lower quality jobs. China hires teachers...
