Resources or tips for 1 to 1 classes?
I've been preparing students for exams in 1 to 1 sessions for a couple of years now and now I've started getting private students without any concrete goals (there's a sales team at my school, they sign the students up and give them to the teachers). Mostly, these students are rather advanced (aroun...

Re: Teaching English through Art - any ideas?
What are the levels? Could be anything from describe what you see in a big picture (colours, actions, clothes, landscape features) to what are the 5 most important works of art from your country/in the world to big questions like what is art/is this art/why is it not art if you or I do it but it is ...

OMG! New exam to be marked entirely by computer!
I apologize for the crude internet acronym but it's actually nicer than what I'm saying here IRL (in real life)! I just read this article from the Guardian about computers marking exam essays. When I visited the site for the Pearson Test of English Academic, I found that not only is the writing comp...

Teaching CAE Use of English
Hi Lucy, I'm leading a small (6 adults) CAE prep course for the December exams and I was hoping you had some suggestions about how to help the students approach the vocabulary tasks in the Use of English paper. The students all passed a pre-test so ensure they were at the right level for the course,...

Your experience in MA TESOL/Applied Linguistics
Hi everybody, I'm looking to start a MA TESOL program in the spring and I'm hoping some people will share their experiences getting a TEFL-related higher diploma. Where did you go? Would you recommend the school/teachers/program? What would you do differently? Do you have any advice for prospective ...

Re: Teaching 'Literature' when no one takes it seriously
I think your approach of incorporating creative writing into the class is great. Give them plenty to do and let them know their final mark will be based on participation and effort rather than accuracy or an exam at the end. Can you compare films and books? Also use plenty of short stories and folkt...

Re: Questions about being a TEFL teacher
Hi, I've only been teaching for 2 and a half years, but I'll answer your questions the best I can! How possible is it to make a full-time career as a TEFL teacher? Getting work is pretty easy, getting paid well is the hard part. Is it usual for a TEFL teacher to teach in many different countries? Th...
