Re: Advice sought for teaching high level bizEnglish students
If they are Advanced then they should have a very clear idea about what they need, what they find difficult and what they are unsure about. At that level they need to tell YOU, but of course you will be able to input as well if you spot things to pick up on. They may well need / want to be up to spe...

Re: Question about Cambridge DELTA and salary
With a Delta you should be in line for a DoS position, which carries a bit more dosh. The Cambridge Delta is IMO extremely good, but even then it doesn't cover enough - there are many practical and effective teaching techniques it doesn't cover. I always ask my students this question about their Eng...

Re: my student is forgetful
Hi there. I'm not sure how folk can offer solutions without knowing why your student is forgetful. Can you enlighten us a little more about him / her ?
You say you have worked so hard teaching......but what about the student ? What is his/ her contribution to the learning ?

Re: New to teaching - please help
Need much more info about your interview / the class before I can offer any help.
If you really don't have any more info at all about your interview, then I'd dump them PDQ and find a decent school.

Re: CELTA+ No Degree
I haven't got a degree and have a CELTA and the Delta. Even when I just had the CELTA, I never had any problem getting teaching work whether in language school, in company or freelance at home. Probably the reason is that I have a commercial management background, and it seems that students/learners...

Re: Help with ideas re: context and error correction
Here’s my tuppence worth... In my quite a few years, I can never remember hearing any of my SS say that they had an interesting lesson because of the ‘context’ topic. I have never heard any S say that it was really interesting to read about / listen to a text about shoes, or gold, or China etc. My b...

Re: They don't do homework...
Just checking - is the homework you give them really integrated (ie as an integral part of their lessons / course ) ? Also, is the homework part of some activity the next day ? eg prepare to give a short talk on your favourite....... or maybe a couple/small group of students could prepare something ...

Re: Black lists .is there one for Teachers or indeed Centres?
TEFL organigrams are based on the lines of "ah, you can serve a good gin and tonic at 30,000ft so we'll let you fly the plane!" Because of this many of the folk running TEFL are useless, and I don't know of any DoS who has had any relevant training for the job, apart from actual teacher tr...

Re: One-to one book/material suggestions
For that kind of learner, I'd try my old favourites: International Express (with video), and Intelligent Business (more businessy). But they both might hit the spot as many of the business topics are of general interest too. If you can only do one, then International Express has a nice mix and good ...

Re: General Advice to a Newbie
My General Advice would be: you've got a great degree, but it depends on what your career goals are. If you want a job in Industry & Commerce (ie using your degree), then my advice is don't, ever, go into TEFL. It won't help your career search, nor will it look good on your CV. But, if you would...

Re: **HOW TO ACHIEVE A VERY GOOD GRADE IN CELTA COURSE?**
Hi. It's really good to set yourself a goal like you have. As someone said, the grade is probably not important for getting work though. To prepare, thinking back to my CELTA 10 years ago, I would do some revision or study on teaching from coursebooks - what material do you use, what do you discard,...

Salaries are poor. Period. It's not surprising when you look at how TEFL is run and by whom.

Re: Doing Delta modules 1 and 3 independently with no course
I did my Mods 1 and 3 with Distance Delta. As I have no academic background and am no spring chicken, I needed all the tutor guidance I could get. Frankly, I don't think classroom experience alone is always good enough as a solid base ( I had about 6 years) - the Delta was a huge wake-up call for me !

Re: The real scoop on CELTA
Feel sympathy with anyone who has failed the CELTA, but if you can, do it again. It's well worth the effort. Not only does it give a broad base of the basics of TEFL, but it comes with a certificate entitled "Cambridge University" and is respected in the business. I don't agree with negati...

Re: What does CELTA cover?
The Cambridge CELTA is an excellent course as it covers all the main bases for TEFL and comes with a Cambridge University certificate (worth having !). But for someone like yourself, perhaps your aim after CELTA should be the Cambridge Delta. This is Masters Degree level, and really explores teachin...

Re: CELTA - UK or abroad
There is no doubt that choosing a well-established and successful (in candidate results) Centre is very important when you are going to spend your hard-earned cash. Commited, exacting and supportive tutors are a must. You would think that a Centre appointed by Cambridge University ESOL/ English woul...

Re: Experience needed before pursuing a DELTA? + Centres.
Hi. The Delta is a very demanding course, and the Cambridge Handbook leaves a lot to be desired in terms of some basic guidance for potential candidates. Regarding teaching experience, it is useful to have been teaching full-time for 2-3 years, but more important than that is your academic ability. ...
