Re: British or Irish passport for South Korea
I am able to get both passports like yourself but have an Irish one. That is a choice that I made long ago as I was born in Dublin. However, having being raised in the north, some employers like the sound of being educated in the UK. So, it is really up to you. I am in the north of China by the by.

Re: Graduates2China - Any opinions?
I am in China and have used an agency once but never did need to pay an up-front fee. That should be between the actual agency and the job provider. I post because I have a concern. The "entry" visa that you require to teach in China insists that you have at least two years working experie...

Re: What do you do in your private lessons? Need advice plea
As above. But for written homework (I never use the actual class time for writing), depending on the time you have at hand, I find that the students like you to sit with them as you mark the essays/exercise. You can make this a discussion point - "what do you think is the reason for this correc...

Re: Teaching large classes of Chinese teenagers oral English
Hi. I was in the same position as you some time back. Basically use all the resources at your disposal. Is there a computer with projector in each class? If so, that will save you a lot of time (always prepare for a time when something is not working - in other words, always have a lesson at hand th...

1. Is it worth it? (from a self-development, broadening horizons perspective) Definitely 2. Will we be able to put much money away for savings? Yes you cannot spend what you earn 3. Will our pay reflect our qualifications? (This isn't massively important) No 4. Do we need to do a TEFL course, or wou...

Re: Heading to China in October
Raff as the previous poster has said many foreigners, teachers etc. have been booted out. Many teachers' visas are about teaching. So as a result of the Olympic Games and the fact that many teaching contracts have ended, the Chinese Government are asking those who wish to extend certain visas to do ...

Re: "at" a place as contrasted with "in" a place
We say "at the office","at school", "at 22 Mill Street", but "in school", "in the kitchen", "in the country", "in room 6A", etcetera. How do I explain this to my students? Are there rules for this? Thanks, Matt Aye it is complica...

Re: Is there an age cut-off in Japan?
Hi. I've asked a similar question before on this board and have gotten an edifying response regarding S. Korea. However, I'm wondering more and more about Japan. Actually, here is my scenario: I have a Bachelor's in English Literature, a Masters in Library and Information Science and am only a few ...

Re: Advice on how to get a job- not a "native" English speaker
I'm a 27 year old black South African and have just finished a hectic 3-month long TEFL course. I've been noticing the adverts looking for "native speakers", which I feel I cannot apply for because, although I come from SA and have 1st language English speaker proficiency, I am black and ...

Re: Chinese Students - What do you think about them?
Fantastic post, not only that it clearly is in line with my thoughts/challenges/experiences as a teacher here, but that it is posted in time to how China is now and how we, as teachers, can address these challenges (and difficulties) for learners. I did do some research on this before I arrived and ...

Re: Global teachers
On April 17 2008 I paid global teachers 100 Euros for an application fee. I was told this fee would entitle me to Job placement services. Global teachers said they already had interest in my CV and wanted to set up phone interviews with perspective employers, so I paid the fee. However, no intervie...

Re: Anyone with experience teaching in Asia
i am sorry for the delay. Your request is vague. Some questions: Who do you want to teach? Where? Where are you now? Are you a native speaker of English? It would be no problem to teach in many countriies in Asia, but some countries do indeed require a Degree in some subject as well as a teaching qu...

Re: covered with, by or in?
Hi Jasminade, Thank you very much. To keep the ball rolling, here are some ideas. 1. In many grammars 'by' is opposed to 'with' as either 'agent' vs. 'instrument', or 'method' vs. 'instrument'. e.g. The door was opened by the teacher. (agent) The door was opened with a key. (instrument). The door w...

Re: covered with, by or in?
Hello Matthau I remember the Cambridge Advanced English book dealing with this subject. I do not have a copy on my but I can start the ball rolling with what I recall by citing that there are five different categories of prepositions. They are listed as prepositions of place, manner, direction, time...

Thanks Jasminade, Ideally, we would both like to teach children (we both will, by then, have our TEFL and I am a qualified teacher, Greg also has two years experiences working with a childrens charity as a volunteer counsellor). We will actually be coming from India where we would have spent some t...

Re: Adult 6 month begginer lesson plan
You mean a course, don't you? If you are not confident in developing your own course then you can use a book. Try New Headway for Beginners, or, New English File. I am developing a specialised course at the moment and I could fly something at you, but there are a lot of things on the web that will d...

I am very flattered to be the first one to help you. He is a kid so, some time after the initial shock, he will quickly get into learning new things. Have a look at this site. It is a bit daunting but there is a lot of material and articles for a much fuller guidance. On the left hand side column th...
