Teaching English as a Global Language

Unread post by Wendy1969 »

Hello, I wish to ask a question here.

Since English is a global language, should we change it to Teaching English as a Global Language instead of Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language? This will further emphasise the importance of learning English as a global language as well as the most important language to learn globally.

That's an interesting perspective. The term "Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language" (TEFL/TESL) has been traditionally used to describe teaching English to non-native speakers in countries where English is not the primary language.

However, rebranding it to "Teaching English as a Global Language" could indeed emphasize its universal importance and highlight its role in global communication. It could also reflect the evolving context where English is widely used as a lingua franca in various international settings.
Thank you for your reply. However, I am a bit perplexed as to why I did not receive a notification from telfnet with regard your reply.
Anyway, I am glad I noted your reply after I decided to check this site today.

Yes, it may be a good idea to rebrand it. But, on the other hand, many people are so used with the acronym TEFL. So, one have to look into other factors and consider other aspects before one go all out to rebrand it.

By the way, please check out my website - Wendy's Global English - if you or any readers here may be interested to explore a bit more about my perspective of what Global English is about.
