Advice needed on improving ESL speaking level

Unread post by natymar17 »

Hi everyone!

I am a student of English Philology in Spain. I have been studying English for years and I like to watch series and films in their original version to learn and improve my level. However, I would like some advice to improve my speaking level, my fluency and my accent since I cannot practice with anyone. Do you have any advice for me?

Any opinion or personal experience would be very helpful.

Thank you all very much!

Try shadowing, recording yourself, and thinking in English. Use Tandem or HelloTalk for practice, and read aloud daily. Do you prefer a British or American accent? 😊

Hello! It's great to hear you're so dedicated to improving your English skills. Here are a few tips to help you enhance your speaking, fluency, and accent:

Shadowing Technique: Try to mimic the speech patterns, intonation, and pronunciation of native speakers. You can do this by repeating dialogues from your favorite series or movies. This technique helps you get the rhythm and flow of the language.

Language Exchange Apps: Use apps like Tandem, HelloTalk, or Speaky to find language exchange partners. You can practice speaking with native speakers who are also looking to learn your native language. It's a win-win!

Record Yourself: Record your voice while speaking in English and listen to it. This helps you identify areas for improvement and track your progress over time.

Online Speaking Clubs: Join online speaking clubs or forums where you can practice speaking with others. Websites like Meetup or ConversationExchange can connect you with groups interested in language practice.

Imitate Accents: Pay attention to the accents of native speakers. Try to imitate their pronunciation and intonation. YouTube has many tutorials on different English accents that can be quite helpful.

Read Aloud: Read books, articles, or any text aloud. This helps improve your pronunciation and fluency. Try to vary your reading material to encounter different vocabulary and sentence structures.

Practice with AI: Use language learning apps like Duolingo or Babbel that include speaking exercises. Some AI language assistants can also help you practice pronunciation and conversation.

Voice Assistants: Interact with voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa in English. It's a fun way to practice speaking and get instant feedback.

Mind Your Pronunciation: Focus on tricky sounds and practice them. English Central and Forvo are great resources for pronunciation practice.

Watch with Subtitles: While watching series and movies, use English subtitles. This helps you connect spoken and written English and improve your listening and speaking skills.

Remember, consistency is key.
