Even if you don't speak Chinese you can still find out if the TEFL recruiter or employer who is trying to recruit you is legitimate or a scam artist, skimmer or scammer or worse yet, an identity thief there are five ways to do this in 10 minutes or less...

1. DIY yourself with an online search. The directions are here https://www.reddit.com/r/CFTU/comments/ ... ense_in_5/

2. Call or visit the office of China Scam Patrol near the Xidan subway station after you make an appointment by email
and they have an ID number to log into the SAIC database. You can buy one to for 5,000yuan

3. Contact Kathy Li at the China Teachers Alliance or send her an email with your request if you are a CTA member and she will send you a screen shot of the company's profile. (usually a 72 hour turnaround during this COVID down-time)

4. Send an email to Alex at the CFTU (ChinaForeignTeachersUnion {at} g mail (currently a 3-5 day turnaround)

5. If you are in Beijing take a taxi to the SAIC HQ office which is exactly half-way between the Tuanjiehu and Liangmaqiao subway stations - about a 30 minute walk from the U.S. Embassy, Monday through Friday as ask to speak with someone in English and they will help you for free. Be warned there is usually a 30-45 minute que.

Never work for anyone in China who does not a business licenses or you will have no legal recourse in the event of any dishonesty or dispute. Many schools do not want any accountability or law suits so they often do not register with SAIC and operate under a fictitious name, and the Principals seldom give more than a meaningless Chinglish name like Jenny Zhang or a fake Chinese name altogether that is very common, like an English "Jane Smith". I personally always ask to make a copy of plastic national ID card of the principal when I sign a contract. Have lots of fun and adventure in China guys!

Thank you for this link. This makes due diligence a piece of cake imo. Why bother even doing a telephone interview if the recruiter and/or school do not have a SAIC business license that I can see and verify in less that 15 minutes. If I never have any further contact with the CFTU, they just did me a huge favor. Kudos CFTU!

This is pretty cool. Thanks for this tool. I think it can be useful to weed out all the baddy apples and all those ghosts companies that keep changing their names. I found out these business licenses cost $50.000 each so the scammers won't be buying very many of them!

Thanks Cricket. This post is golden IMO since it makes due diligence a matter of 30 minutes online without having to question or argue with people. Two thumbs up!

If you go there in person you can get much quicker service and multiple searches if you are willing to tip 100 rmb per name. If you develop this relationship you'll be able to do it by phone with that worker the next time you need to investigate.

Well I did some homework on this topic at https://reddit.com/r/cftu and found this below which makes it very easy to spot a fake or shady, or illegal employer in China. If they cannot send you a high-resolution color scan of their SAIC business license and SAFEA registration like those below (not a photocopy or low-resolution scan which are easily photo-shopped) they are undoubtedly a scam and you should not send them your resume or passport scan.

The business licence above is the one Echo English have on their website. Following the verification procedure I wasn't able to verify that licence.

I have received a job offer from Echo so I have a note of their full business name in Chinese. Putting the number into NECIPS: http://www.gsxt.gov.cn did not give the company's name.

Does that mean Echo are using a fake licence?

According to China Scam Patrol, Echo is using a business license of a third party company. I suggest you call Crystal at SAFEA in the Beijing HQ office and ask them for the Registration number for Echo English. If she gives you a number they are registered, at least with SAFEA, if they are not registered you will find out, and you can cross them off your short list. I suggest you just pick a whitelisted company/school from this list of over a thousand in China; https://www.reddit.com/r/ChinaTeachers/ ... _tefl_job/
