China is a unique and a really fun place to work but expect to hear these very common lies within days of sending out your resume for any TEFL teaching job that is not a public school or university. By knowing these lies are coming you can avoid dozens of scams that will follow.

So For anyone even thinking about teaching in China, prepare for the following lies and then read the links at the bottom so your wallet will not go on a sudden diet...

1.) You MUST have a TEFL certificate to teach English in China.

2.) You do not need a Z visa to teach in China for your first 90 day probationary period

3.) Foreigners have no employee rights in China for one year after arrival

4.) You really don't need a university degree to teach English in China

5.) Everyone works 6 days a week

6.) Marketing & Sales is part of every China foreign teacher's job

7.) The air and water pollution is not as bad as they say.

8.) You will save at least $20,000 a year working in China

9.) You cannot get a good job in China without a recruiter like me and TEFL certificate

10.) Once you sign a contract you are stuck in that crappy job for at least a year and if you quit you will be blacklisted and have your visa revoked.

Absolutely agree, but you spoiled it by adding seven spammy links.

Many moons ago, I also fell for three of those lies. If you think about it, to a newbie who makes the mistake of trusting their TEFL recruiter, these lies would sound believable. It's so easy to fall into their web of deceit. The sad thing is that these scam artist agents and recruiters are more often than not fellow-foreigners who constantly drum in our heads that we should "Never trust those Chinese". In truth, it was two laowai (foreigners) that swindled me for the most money in China

LMAO! It's true. I heard every one of these lies and a couple more like...

* "You are better off to sign your contract when you get there so you can negotiate a better deal"

* "Don't worry, my fee is paid from the school, not by you" (Half true but the money comes from your salary allocation"

* "You'll only have to work 20 hours a week."
The best TEFL advice I ever got is at https://reddit.com/r/tefl_tips_traps_scams and right here at TEFL.net.

If you appreciate the truth more than money, just be sure to work either for an international school, a public school, or a white-listed school in China. Otherwise you will here lies every day about schedules, lesson plans, pay, bonuses etc.
I suggest every TEFL teacher take a visit to https://reddit.com/r/TEFLscams BEFORE they send off their resumes.
