Nothing will tick you off more than have to pay serious money to fly to China to be told the paid Fortune 500 Internship you were promised was filled but relax, there is a no name Chinese company that has a slot for you! -but you have to work for free! This scene has played out for two of my friends and one of them wrote out her story above. So unless you can afford to lose $3.000 - $7,000, I suggest you steer clear of these sharks.

Maybe the biggest offenders are the British twin companies of I-to-I and OnlineTEFL.com as I found here:

Just last month BTV reported that about 30 foreigners were arrested because they were doing illegal internships that they paid a 3rd party broker a few thousand dollars to hook up for them. The only legal internships for foreigners in China are the ones you get for free directly with the company that recruits you directly. If the internship is real you will only need to pay your round-trip airfare, and if they offer you a job, they will reimburse that airfare.

Don't be fooled by the sales reps of Gi2c, CRCC, Horizons, Next Step, etc. with lies like "Oh, there is a new law" or that "We have exemptions from the government", or the usual "Don't worry, our owner has connections with top Chinese officials". No third party broker will ever get you an internship with a Fortune 500 company or even an SOE

But if you are enrolled at a top Chinese University, they can get you an internship in your senior year with a local SOE, and even that will be for free.
The best TEFL advice I ever got is at https://reddit.com/r/tefl_tips_traps_scams and right here at TEFL.net.
