Japan's regard for TEFL certificates

How are 120-hour/with practicum TEFL certificates currently regarded by most employers in Japan? When I taught there in 1997-2004, they didn't seem to have much sway. It was mostly about the bachelor degree for visa purposes, and from there it was your years of experience that opened higher-level doors until you got to the point where employers wanted an MA TESOL. It was the MA TESOL that seemed to distinguish somebody as a serious EFL teacher. Even CELTA and Trinity or their more advanced diplomas didn't seem to open doors the way they do in other regions. Has that changed at all in Japan?
