queen word for bed or bedding

Unread post by Maknes »

Hi,

Just wondering why the word queen or king used for bed or bedding as it does not replicate true meaning of the item,
The word I think was introduced by royal families as it could be reason the specific size bed was made for them and they named it after them.

Just off the top of my head: These terms come from "king-sized" / "king-size." They simply mean large. For beds, a term was needed that indicated something larger than a double bed was needed because larger beds were built. "King" has the cachet of greatness, which equates with big. It seems to have come into use far removed from the concept of royalty -- although perhaps retaining just a whiff of the grandness of royalty. "Queen-size" was brought in to label something between double and king, which, I believe was a size that came about a number of years later. (A look at Ngram Viewers indicates that "queen-sized" was almost non-existent during the first uses of 'king-sized,")

That is correct as Queen size bedding or bed came after the king size and Queen size was mainly introduced for a couple and a child as 2 adults and one kid could not accommodate on double size.

The term "queen-size" was likely used to imply a larger and more spacious bed fit for royalty. Similarly, "king-size" implies even more space and opulence than a queen-size bed. It suggests a bed that is truly fit for a king, with ample room for rest and relaxation.

The use of the words "queen" and "king" to refer to bed sizes, such as queen-sized and king-sized beds, doesn't necessarily have a direct connection to royalty or monarchs, although the terminology may evoke a sense of luxury and spaciousness.
