When they say that they don't spend MUCH time on grammar, though, they probably mean that they don't spend hundreds of hours studying it. I highly doubt that they have become fluent in anything without spending the 30 or so hours it would take to read through Tae Kim.

Unless you learn the basic fundamentals, it is going to to extremely hard to pick up anything from just listening.

I'm not so sure it needs to be made interesting. The interest has to come from the students. They need to be motivated.

And I think a lot of it is acquired by the student rather than taught by the teacher. This happens when the student is exposed to a lot of language. They should read and listen as much as possible. Look at the ideas in general and then focus on the structures within.

It all comes with time and a good eye/ear.
