2021 UPDATE: China Foreign Teacher Salaries At Record High

Unread post by Vagabond »

It appears that two pages of articles and links documenting the current average salaries of China Foreign Teachers has vanished from this forum. Therefore if anyone wants to know WHY the current average salary of foreign AB, Subject, Art, TOEFL, IB, IELTS, and TEFL Salaries of QUALIFIED REAL TEACHERS WITH VERIFIABLE DEGREES IS NOW AT 31,000 RMB PER MONTH IN A TIER 1 CITY, you only need to read these articles and charts below, but basically it is because of the massive shortage of teacher created by the COVID crisis lock-out. https://opnlttr.com/letter/pandemics-bo ... world-wide

If you need secondary confirmation, you only need to check with SalaryExplorer, The BBC, Forbes Magazine, ECA international, China Teachers Alliance, China Daily Newspaper, The Telegraph Newspaper, Global Times Newspaper, Expat Teachers Association, CFTU, Ministry of Labor, SAFEA, ImmigrationWorld, China Scam Patrol, Mercer HR, Kroll HR, Adecco HR, or any veteran China foreign teacher who is NOT working at a public school in Mongolia, who never worked at any other school in China. To compare China salaries in detail see here http://www.salaryexplorer.com/salary-su ... &jobtype=1

These new high salaries are not "convenient" for TEFL recruiters, brokers, and job agents because if teachers job applicants know the truth it makes it very difficult for them to take a huge 30%-50% haircut when they ILLEGALLY skim from your paycheck every month. According to Chinese labor law, "NO MORE THAN ONE MONTH'S SALARY" can be paid for any job placement in China to any third party - in ANY profession. You can read all of China's Labor Laws and your 22 Employee Rights at https://reddit.com/r/tefl_tips_traps_scams. The more you know, the less likely you are to become a victim of any fraud including "The Silent Scam" aka as "skimming". Good luck to you in your teaching adventures. TO MAKE SURE YOU QUALIFY TO TEACH IN CHINA READ THESE OFFICIAL CHINA GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES http://english.www.gov.cn/services/workinchina/

Do not expect to get rich quick in China according to your homeland standards since the cost of living in China is quite low and the Chinese exchange rate is roughly 6 rmb to 1 U.S. dollar. Conversely, if you negotiate your own contract and go the DIY route in your job placement, you will earn considerably more money and have a comfortable life while you are in China. Also do not expect current high salaries to remain once the borders open back up.

Vagabond, what’s the matter with you three? Can’t you just take a hint and stop spamming the forum? I mean, it’s not as if no one has noticed. All it does is attract more spammers.

There’s so much more to TEFL than spamming. The upheaval of moving, the culture shock, new job stress, which sector … Without spammers trying to divert people into fantasies. Why not stop pretending you’re a ‘teacher trainer’ and start writing about resumes, visa requirements, lesson plans and all the headaches that go to working in TEFL? At least be of some use instead of a spammer for an illegal union. You’ve done your job, if spamming is all you’ve got why not just call it a day before you also disappear?

My sister is teaching in Shanghai since 2017 and got trapped in China by the COVID lock-down. In 2017 she was earning 19,000 rmb per month and after the border closings she got a shitload of offers and is now earning 25,000rmb per month at a different private school and has a free furnished apartment that she shares with another teacher. She also gets free lunches and a subway card. When I was teaching in Beijing five years ago, I was only earning 17,000 with a nice apartment. These days, some of my old colleagues are earning over 25,000 and those with education degrees or teaching certificates are taking down at least 30,000rmb a month. These salaries are being confirmed as the "new normal" but I personally thing they will drop down just as soon as the borders open. But since the PSB is now scrutinizing everything from teaching experience to diplomas to criminal records, I don't think there will be as many REAL teachers rushing to China. This also caught my attention viewtopic.php?f=21&t=8847 so I am debating whether to return or not. I have a bad feeling there will soon be a Taiwan invasion and I don't want to be there when the shit hits the fan.

Yeah, but as soon as these borders open up again, I'll bet these salaries plummet back down, just as fast as they went up.

Although the current salary of China foreign teachers is sky high, the good times may not last after the COVID crisis is gone https://www.reddit.com/r/ChinaTeachers/ ... s_soar_to/ What goes up, usually comes down. If you are inside China now, it would be a good idea to sign a long-term contract and lock yourself into a great deal while you still can.

Also remember, high pay in China is still not a guarantee of coming home with enough money to pay off your student loan or mortgage. But you can live very well while you are in China. All things are relative.

I just found this article from Forbes magazine which puts China in the top 10 best-paying countries for expat TEFL teachers and other professions too. They have an interesting chart but I don't know how to show the chart here. https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccar ... 952924684d

I just came across this interesting website with a "salary calculator". Unfortunately it was posted in 2018 BEFORE the COVID crisis spiked the expat salaries in China by 40% or more. http://www.foreignteacherpay.com/ I suppose you can use this calculator and just add 40% to get a bare minimum salary WITHOUT housing costs factored in. Housing can be as much as 6,000 rmb in Shanghai and Beijing to as low as 2,500 rmb in Ningbo, Handan, Weifeng, or other third tier cities (monthly).

I was thinking about this and frankly, if foreign teachers are still blocked from the country, what good is they huge pay raise, other than for those already trapped in China by the COVID crisis. Its just like teasing a dog by hold a big juicy bone just out of reach. What a crappy situation eh? But for all the real teachers working in China, they certainly deserve the raise for all the exploitation and cheating they were subjected to all these years.

So when are they opening the borders back up again in China so my GF can come back in and cash in? I stopped teaching last year and have been doing voice over narration but my GF was teaching TEFL and TOEFL but got locked out when she went home to see her sick mom at Christmas.
