Do I need a TEFL certificate?

Unread post by Tom_cahill »

Hello folks

I am a qualified French and Spanish teacher with 5 years experience and currently teaching at national teaching school in the UK (only ever worked here).

Thinking of teaching EFL abroad but am just wondering whether a tefl certificate is wholly necessary or not?

Thanks for any information.

In general YES.

Are you planning to travel abroad? If so, a degree (in any subject, which you have by the sound of it) is required but this is for work permit regulations. After that, a TEFL certificate is more and more required by schools. It will help you find employment and better pay. It may not be "wholly" necessary but it is recommended.
