Finding work as a private tutor/teacher

Hello I am a private ESOL tutor/teacher. I am hoping to talk to other tutors in the UK about how they find work.
I have been teaching privately on a one to one basis for 6 years with language schools who send teenagers to the UK for English immersion lessons. I would also like to now tutor to people who already live in the UK but need English lessons. I need advice on the best way to get students.?
If you work in the UK could you please respond. I would love to hear your suggestions on how to best find tutoring/teaching opportunities.

A lot depends on where you are in the UK (unless you want to teach by Skype etc), and whether you're in a large urban centre or in the countryside. Advertising in the classifieds of a local paper has worked for me in the past. Or free noticeboards in appropriate spots, maybe using a foreign language. If you want to get started you've got to put yourself about a bit.

Hi Heidi, I work as a private tutor in one of the largest destinations for students in the uk - here is what i do
gumtree ad - really works - pics are important - so are testimonials.
local facebook groups for foreign students -eg someting like "espanioles en Oxford" probably exists in your town.
Work with a partner school - there are [probably} start up schools in your area - really small places - they always struggle to max their room use and would probably be willing to do a deal with you say a couple of quid an hour for using one of their rooms for your private learners - you look legit - the environment is great and the students are happy
recommendations - this takes time but if you are good and attractively priced you will over the course of about a year start to get students who have heard of you from a friend or a friend of a friend.
specialise - learners often want IELTS, FCE and CAE - be good at exam prep.

some other things to consider - charge one month in advance. if learners cancel on the day they lose the lesson. if they cancel with 24 hours notice in advance they must rearrange the lessons then and take the lesson in the one month period (if possible for you) or they lose the lesson.

be prepared to work anti social hours- evenings and weekends, it sucks but that is where the money is.

There are many online tuition companies that provide tutoring to a range of students in the UK. Most are always looking for experienced tutors that have availability. I am working with peppo.org that provide private online tuition as well as donating tuition to disadvantaged children. Might be worth getting in touch with them.

How long have you worked with them? I've googled them and they don't seem to have much of a presence. Even their Youtube account has one post that is only a month old. No reviews. No online presence. No thanks.
