Unread post by acefondu »

I contracted HIV recently.... is there no possibility for me to teach abroad in the future anymore?

Wow,sorry to hear of your unpleasant surprise. I think you need to find a country that does not require medical certificates which would eliminate most all Asian countries. I think you might have a shot in Latin America which is not very regulated on foreign TEFL teachers yet. Good luck to you. What country are you in now and did you get two tests to eliminate the possibility of a false positive, which happened to my brother?

Maybe after giving a special appeal to the immigration department or something. Who knows

Thailand does not test for HIV nor do they care if you are HIV+
I spoke with Thai Embassy directly today in Washington and they confirmed this.
So don't let people on here mislead you.
Contact the embassy directly and find out the facts.. not the myths
There is plenty of opportunity for people who are HIV+

I think you’re going to get a very unpleasant surprise if you told any Thai school (or any professional Thai) that you were HIV+ and think they’d be understanding about it. I’m sure there are people who are infected, but you’ll never ever meet a teacher who would admit it.

Hi John V55. I never said that an HIV+ person has to disclose. I simply said that they DO NOT test for HIV in Thailand for medical certificate for employment.

I never said you did say anyone had to disclose and yes, if you don’t tell no one will know, unless the symptoms manifest themselves and then you’d be out like a shot. There are opportunities for those who are HIV+, but not if anyone finds out.
