Looking for some advice.

Hi all,

I am new to the forum. I am a 27 year old male and I am looking for some advice on securing a job teaching English as a second/foreign language.

I graduated a while back with a BA Hons in English Literature and Journalism, but after a year out, decided to partake in the MA in English Language Teaching. I am currently waiting for my dissertation result, which if passed will secure me the degree.

However, I am unsure about what steps to take providing I pass the degree, and where or how to look and apply for jobs. I have browsed job databases such as the guardian and tefl.org.uk, but they all seem to require a minimum of 100 - 150 teaching hours. The degree I took part in only covered roughly 3 teaching hours as part of a practical teaching module, along with various presentations and other ELT related work.

Does anybody have any advice for somebody in my position from the UK, who will hopefully obtain the degree but lacks in teaching hours when applying for jobs?

A few people have mentioned doing a CELTA to boost my teaching hours, but, some have mentioned if I pass the MA in English Language Teaching, it will be recognised enough by institutions to secure me a job.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
del_boy123.

In order to get a foreign expert certificate in China you must have 2 years of related experience - but there is a way around it - In Shanghai and Beijing they offer a 10 day course to get TEFL - (even if you have one) and then they will wave the 2 years experience requirement - it costs about 6000 RMB - $1000 US
