Re: Does Tefl need a shake up and need to shape up? Discuss.

I don't know how you got the idea that those are standard current TEFL methodologies. Sensible use of L1, telling students what they will do and why, and writing up systematic analysis of the language they will be using are all quite standard in Cambridge Delta lessons, for example.

Re: How best to group words

It's even more confusing in the classroom - how are you supposed to think of practice activities for words which aren't related? There are only so many times you can use Taboo, Random Pelmanism and storytelling activities...

Re: Want to go to work in Korea but I dont have much money

I'm not sure, but it would be a terrible idea as that would mean putting yourself in debt to your employer - and there are so many dodgy schools in Korea that you really don't want to be stuck in a job because of that. Better to borrow from someone you know or even on your credit card, though again ...

Re: TEFL needed with UK qualified teacher status?

I trained several people who already had QTS and they found the adjustment to the new teaching style/ ages/ class sizes etc very challenging at the beginning of the course and so got a lot out of it and were very positive about the experience afterwards. In terms of being ready to teach TEFL, especi...

Re: TEFL & CELTA?

I have heard differing stories about whether it is practically possible to work in Thailand without a degree, but otherwise I'd agree with Matter. If you can get more money than the CELTA would cost and want to spend it, the best choices are: - Doing a specialist TEFL course straight after, e.g. a t...

Re: Known Scams - Do not respond to these!!!

Sounds like a scam. These things would settle it for me: - Is the pay ridiculously high? - Do they accept applications from people who would never get a visa for such a job? - Do they eventually ask for money, e.g. for arranging a visa? Could you possibly string them along a bit more or apply again ...

I can't think of any way of adding a TPR-like element, but here's my TEFL.net article on prepositions of time games:

Re: How to explain difference between "can" and "could"?

First of all, although those two sentences do mean "How is it possible for me to improve my English?", that doesn't make them examples of modals of possibility/ probability like "That must/ may/ might/ could/ can't be John". The difference between can and could in this kind of question is the same a...

They are indeed both difficult to find jobs in (especially for people with no experience) and expensive to live in. Generally better to head south and/ or east in Europe for a first job, or perhaps to Asia.

Re: Have I just paid for a fake course?

There's a thin line between fake and just useless, I think it's more likely to be the latter. Their accreditation page doesn't say anything about accreditation, though, which is one of many bad signs on their website.

Re: Spain.

Although I haven't taught there for years myself, several people have told me that the job market is much better than you'd think given the economic troubles - although I assume the already low pay and conditions are getting worse as they are in most industries there. It's best to plan to: - Apply f...

Re: Beginners of mixed ability

I'm not sure if taking things slowly but surely is usually the best approach with Beginner/ False Beginner/ Elementary students. The best illustration of that is to think about what it is likely to take to get that student to PET level as quickly as possible (although obviously not half as quickly a...

Re: Is it worth getting into TEFL ??

There are places where you are unlikely to ever earn enough to save and/ or support a family even if you later move into management or teacher training (e.g. most of Europe) and there are places where you can save from day one but are unlikely to want to teach in for me than a few years (most famous...
