You have a 50℅ chance of getting caught working illegally in China:

being fined;
spending time in prison;
deported.

Additionally, Chinese are offered financial rewards for dobbing in foreigners. It may even be your current employer who collects the reward!.

Don't work illegally!

Sure is. Mine is just a plain old 'combined arts' degree, which started out as a history degree, with the Open University, UK. Unfortunately in China no school means no salary, unless it's holiday pay. I have been in China for 3 years and at the best of times I can tell you getting paid on time and correctly isn't at the top of schools and agent's priorities.
