Re: Questions about CELTA

In general the regular course is always going to be better than the online, albeit I believe that any online course put together by CELTA (Cambridge) must be pretty good. The regular course is usually something like 4 weeks and pretty intensive. Just in terms of getting it over with and personal mot...

Re: Resources for teaching teenagers

I'd recommend EnglishClub.

There is tons of amazing material there for learners, and also worksheets etc for teachers.

Also check out Games and Quizzes.

Re: Questions about CELTA

Assuming you are a UK citizen, then visas and work permits don't come into it. One reason most schools around the world ask for a degree is because the relevant government insists on that to get a work permit. So a degree would not be a legal requirement for you in the UK. A CELTA is a KIND of TEFL ...

Re: am I too old

Pardon me while I roll on the floor laughing  I got my first teaching job (in a language school in Asia) when I was 50. And if teaching online, your age is even less relevant. Also, don't forget that not all countries are as ageist as we are in the West. On the other hand, many native English s...

Re: Do agents make 40% on every student?!

I agree Starling. Agents seem to be a mysterious bunch operating in stealth mode. I don't think I've ever knowingly met an agent, though I've worked for a school in France that sent students to UK and was thus effectively an agent myself—in my own very modest way. But really I think "agents" can be ...

Re: Do agents make 40% on every student?!

I used to work in this area but I forget the exact figures. However, I can confirm that both your scenarios exist: - Agents find and send students to schools in UK (and elsewhere). 40% sounds like what I remember. Certainly doesn't surprise me. - Language schools do the same, for similar commissions...

Re: My dilemma

Just wondering how binding that contract that you signed was, both legally and morally. You say you signed it two months ago but only recently received an invitation. I don't know how things work in Russia, but seems to me strange to have a binding contract before receiving an invitation. Also, what...

UK is not USA which stalks people around the world and demands tax wherever its citizens are. I believe (may be a bit out of date here) that if you are out of UK for more than 3 months in the year, you don'y pay UK tax full stop

Cancellation and payment policy?

If you teach privately, do you have a cancellation and payment policy? For example, how do you deal with last-minute cancellations? Do you charge up-front or later? Do you think it's necessary to have terms and conditions or play by ear? It's easy to get taken advantage of, but one doesn't want to a...
