Re: Online teaching: The fallacy of making a quick buck

I think the saying, when in Rome applies. We are products of our culture and I too prefer my own, but under multiculturalism I preferred Asian conservatism over extreme western liberalism. No culture is perfect and the bureaucracy of Asia and China often drove me mad, but it is what it is. I prefer...

Re: Sent out detailed resume and photo to recruiters (eslcafe)

As long as you haven't given out your bank details you should be OK. You will spammed to death of course. Remember, many of the offers you get will be fantasies to lure you in. Be careful!

Re: Online teaching: The fallacy of making a quick buck

There is a lot of truth about the many unpleasant aspects of their often harsh Chinese culture. Perhaps, you find it fantastic because you did not end up as their victim. I still prefer the much more civilised Western culture that is not infected by Chinese/Asian culture. Ever society has its drawb...

Re: Online teaching: The fallacy of making a quick buck

I like the idea of online teaching as well as online learning. In fact I still constantly look up various English words on the internet. But, I think it, like onsite teaching, should only be considered for more mature students who genuinely enjoy learning English language or for students have real i...

Re: Why You Should Stay Away From the Chinese Foreign Teacher Union (CFTU)

It’s a cultural thing, with state schools being better than the private ones both in student behaviour and workload. If you want to make a career out of teaching you’re wasting your time in TEFL. Take a year out and do a post-grad ‘professional teaching course and go into the International schools.

Re: Why You Should Stay Away From the Chinese Foreign Teacher Union (CFTU)

Yes, it’s true that Asian employers have a very different view of the work ethic than we have here in the west. In many instances you become almost a slave to your employer and as you imply, tread carefully. The vast majority of scams come from the private sector and are best avoided. This is where ...

Re: am I too old?

Never too old to start! Older you are, the more experience you have in the language. Unfortunately, if you’re looking at the Far East and Asia that’s not the case. The schools might welcome you, but the immigration department won’t. Over 60 and you’ll struggle to get a work permit. That’s just how ...

Re: The real scoop on CELTA

You're welcome Wendy. Don't keep paying out, TEFL exists in a sea of sharks. Get what you need and your future will depend on your ability, not how many pieces of paper you've been sold. Good luck. :) Thank you for your kind advice though I am presently not sure about getting back to teaching Engli...

Re: am I too old?

I am 77 years old. It seems like a waste of the remaining years I am willing to give, but nobody seems to want me. I am wondering, does anyone know of a volunteer position or organization that handles volunteers? Perhaps TEFL.com might open a section for we older but better teachers that aren't rea...

Re: Teaching salary in China

Keep in mind that teaching positions in larger cities often come with higher salaries, but living costs are also higher. To save 2000 euros (approximately 16,000 RMB) per month, you would need to earn a gross monthly income of at least 22,000 to 26,000 RMB, accounting for taxes and other deductions...

Re: Have teaching experience...would online cert do??

It depends where you want to teach. If it’s in the west CELTA might be a good idea. Out of the west, don’t waste your money. A basic TEFL cert’ and previous experience will be enough, plus a degree of course. If you really want to get to the top consider training to become a professional teacher.

Re: Teaching salary in China

I think a lot of the problems stem from young people with a degree that they can’t do much with and the myth that if you pay some money and get a TEFL certificate the world is your oyster. Perhaps twenty years ago have blue eyes and can travel was a novelty, but not anymore. A TEFL certificate does ...

Re: WARNING LoveTefl.com is new name for old TEFL job scam.

JOHN V55 I think you might have misunderstood what a TEFL is and are for whatever reason offended. It is a course that teaches a native English speaker techniques to be able to Teach English as a Foreign Language to a non native speaker, hence the term TEFL. It is in no way a replacement of a degre...

Re: Teaching salary in China

I didn’t get deported or scammed and worked for a state school for a number of years. Teachers fully qualified in their own countries can earn good salaries, but for the bottom of the barrel TEFL dreamers, the pot at the end of the rainbow isn’t there. A lot of the characters here leading you on so...
