Re: Is there no chance for me with HIV?

Hi John V55. I never said that an HIV+ person has to disclose. I simply said that they DO NOT test for HIV in Thailand for medical certificate for employment. I never said you did say anyone had to disclose and yes, if you don’t tell no one will know, unless the symptoms manifest themselves and the...

Re: Is there no chance for me with HIV?

I think you’re going to get a very unpleasant surprise if you told any Thai school (or any professional Thai) that you were HIV+ and think they’d be understanding about it. I’m sure there are people who are infected, but you’ll never ever meet a teacher who would admit it.

Re: Best country to turn up and teach with no qualification

Don’t bother Romeo. You are not going to make anything like the suggested income teaching online. You can see the spam of Justin123 above who claims his wife makes $22 an hour teaching online, that’s around 702 Baht. If she’s making that what’s the company behind it making? Double that? Who is payin...

Up to the age of 59 no problem. With a PGCE you’ll go in at the top end in China.

Hi John. Sounds tempting ;) Good job you had that HGV! We've got an English for Taxi Drivers page on EnglishClub. Maybe you could write our English for Truckers page when you've picked up all the lingo   Really wish you all the best. Sounds as though you're falling on your feet! I mi...

Thanks Joe. I fly out next Sunday, the 12th. I used to work in logistics and we were all required to have a class 1 HGV licence. I’ll go back and renew my licence, do the required competence exam and become … A trucker! Flat share already sorted out and guaranteed work when my documents are in order...

Re: Want to teach in Japan or Korea with HIV

You’ll likely get away with it in places like Thailand and Cambodia, but not China for instance where they do blood tests. I’ll stick my neck out here and say that if someone is HIV as a result of a lifestyle choice, like a criminal record it had best be kept very quiet, which throws up questions ab...

Re: Hello New Member New Questions.

Hi Adam, At the age of 45 I’m glad you said a ‘challenge’ and not a career. At that age, with no degree or experience, you’ll be passing through. Let’s briefly take you through it. What goes against you most is no degree. First, yes you’ll find work but it will be at the bottom end of TEFL in privat...

Goodbye TEFL

Goodbye TEFL Goodbye TEFL? Yes, having just turned 64 it’s back home to the UK to work and save up for my retirement at 66. I’ve just spent a year living off savings and confirmed what deep down I already knew – there is no legal work in Asia for the over 60s. Of course, there are some still working...

The Great White Two Legged TEFL Sharks

A funny thing happened to me recently, well not funny, but you know … I received a job offer, good pay, material provided, just what they’re looking for. Didn’t want to see any paperwork and the meeting will be held in a coffee shop near the place of work. Hmmm, I googled and the reviews weren’t goo...

Yes, no problem. The criteria is the degree, not the subject, or grade. Be aware that online ones are not generally accepted.

Re: Information on chances of employment

The name ‘Letho’ doesn’t sound like a native English speaker or Caucasian and additionally, without a degree your chances are slim. An ‘online’ TEFL course won’t help much either. If indeed you’re black South African without a degree I’d say your chances are next to zero. You could try countries lik...

Re: Teaching salary in China

€2000 = ¥15,615. Forget the salaries of 40 – 50K Yuan which would allow that, they’re fantasies. I000 saved Euros a month? Possibly. BTW, teaching outside your place of work and it tends to be enforced in China, will probably get you deported and the PSB are quite strict on that.

Re: 2018 China Foreign English Teacher Qualifications & Requirements For TEFL

Here's a tip Irish and I'll just give it you once. Stay away from the huge amount of links here, they're spam. What China is actually doing is tightening up on the rubbish that collected over the years and getting rid of the fraud degree lot, the ones with criminal records, drug users and they're th...

Hi Irish, Yes, if you’re not careful they’re queueing up out there to scam you. That’s how life is, even if you were on holiday. Yet please bear in mind that the majority focus on scam warnings here are from people who are spammers trying to lead you to a certain website from a trail of other sites....

Re: CELTA or TEFL for those with no teaching background?

You could try doing the one year PGCE teaching qualification as it’s called in the UK, the US must have an equivalent. Failing that, at 35 you have twenty years of almost guaranteed Asian employment in front of you. Start in the less developed countries like Thailand and Cambodia and after two or th...

Re: CELTA or TEFL for those with no teaching background?

Should I or shouldn’t, what’s the best course, what shall I do … If you’re young and serious about teaching as a career consider talking the full teaching qualification. TEFL is for the quick fix-it and those of us too old to start again, it’s the shortcut to teaching and pays accordingly. TEFL, CEL...

Don’t even begin to think about winging it in China. If you already have a degree, go to countries like Thailand or Cambodia, do a TEFL certificate, get some experience and you won’t have to break any laws. Takes time, but time better spent doing it legally than sitting in a deportation centre.
