How to teach reading to pupils with Learning Disabilities?

I am teaching pupils with learning disabilities. I find it very hard to get them to a stage where they can understand what they read. If I read to them out loud they will understand some of it, but when they have to read, they won't understand a thing. Has someone good tips what to do?

It is always good to combine vocabulary and grammar. It makes more sense to teach grammar in a context

Hi Shiri, I was yesterday at a conference and the speaker gave a nice idea how to teach vocabulary. She is using 2 envelopes. First are all the new words in the un-known words envelop. The child has to learn them. Teacher checks the child next day. Words that he got right go to the know envelop and ...
