Re: TEFL teaching working conditions in Brazil

Just bumping this up! Still don't have enough data to make the study viable, if you've ever worked in Brazil feel free to take the 30 second survey!

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Looking for a good TEFL course

You guys should check out http://www.teflcoursereview.com or even just google the name of the provider you have in mind and you should be able to find plenty of reviews from people who have done the course previously.

Re: TEFL training and employment over 50?

Have you considered teaching in Barcelona? I work for TEFL Iberia and our oldest student to date was 67. He was a Californian retiree looking to have a European adventure and he was able to pick up some business classes and private classes.

Re: Teaching in Spain in 2014

I think anyone can work as a freelance: it all depends on your belief... I started getting responses by putting paper ads up in the old days around town... maybe around 30 every 2 weeks. I totally agree - If you're a good teacher, have a good attitude and are proactive there are lots of opportuniti...

Re: Teaching in Spain in 2014

I wouldn't say Barcelona is swamped with teachers, there is a lot of competition in the city centre but in the small towns maybe 20min from the city centre there is a lot of work and some 'breathing space'. 5 years ago the standard pay was 15€/hour net. Now the starting rate for new teachers is 12€ ...

Re: Does Tefl need a shake up and need to shape up? Discuss.

I don't like using formulas for teaching grammar, symbols are meaningless and off-putting to anyone who doesn't know anything about grammar. I've seen some ESL textbooks that look more like maths textbooks. The way I see it, you as a native speaker don't know the form aux + sub + verb + object / adv...

Re: Suggestions for non-ESL training for an ESL audience?

It's a tricky one! All the suggestions you've made are completely correct, the most important thing is to put yourself in their shoes and think about what they would / wouldn't understand. You'll get better at this with a little practice with your ESL audience. As you've got lots of experience you'l...

Re: What do you do in your private lessons? Need advice plea

It depends on their level too, but I would recommend 100% communicative lessons. This is their chance to talk so your job is to provide interesting things to talk about e.g. discussions, debates, points of view, opinions, current affairs. If their level is lower you can still help them describe them...

Video Activity Library

Hello All, I'm writing to make you aware of a new video activity library I'm working on. They follow the format of: 2-3min video clip, script and comprehension check questions. The idea is that the students first listens, listens and reads, then discusses and answers the questions. They are very sim...
