TEFL Help Desk by Lucy
How do I start out as a private teacher?Q: Dear Lucy, I am about to advertise myself out as a private
tutor. How can I get started? How and what do I base each lesson on? Do
I need to purchase a curriculum/syllabus book to help with each lesson?
tips for activities, resouces needed, etc. And how much to charge? I am based in the UK
Anything info will be of help!
I'm feeling a tad frazzled. Maybe it's easier than I think.
ValinaA: Dear Valina,

Teach Vegetate (the alternative to Test Teach Test for students with
limited attention spans like teenagers and kids whose additive and
sugar fixes are starting to wear off). No, this is the newest addition
to my list of "Linguistics that don't put you off your breakfast"
resources, Teachers' TV. ... read on... |
Book Review
Challenges 1Michael Harris and David Mower Publisher: Pearson Longman Components: Student Book, Workbook and CD-rom Summary: Challenges 1 is full of visually stimulating, well-sequenced activities
that combine to make a perfect 'four skills' introduction to English at
Junior High School level.
Longman's
new four level series for teenagers, Challenges, contains an
attractive, informative set of texts suitable for teenagers all over
the world today. Written by a team of authors, each level is inclusive
of a student book, a workbook and an optional video, replete with
activities that smoothly flow together. Two initial factors struck me
when first using Challenges 1: the dual emphasis on visual
attractiveness in the student book, and the well-designed activities
that are sequenced to facilitate vocabulary acquisition. Both factors,
combined with an emphasis on utilizing all four skills, result in a
solid text well worth exploring further... read on...Reviewed by Richard. J. Walker Recent reviews by Carla Wilson, Paul Wicking & Christian Jones |
