True Average Salaries For Foreign Teachers In China...

Unread postby CFTUBeijing » 16 Jan 2013, 02:43

To our teaching colleagues around the world, we want to inform and warn you that over 90% of agents and recruiters will lie to you about your wages and salaries working in China as a teacher. They never get repeat business nor referrals and do not care how angry you will be when you get to China and discover you were deceived. They care only about collecting your signature on a contract so they can get their fee. If you want the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, you need to read these links and if you still want to work in China... contact the employers directly so 20%-50% of your monthly pay check does not go to agents/recruiters. Here is what no agent will ever tell you about working in China:

* If you find your own job you will earn between 10,000 rmb to 20,000 rmb per month.

* If you want to earn the most money negotiate your own contract directly with a private international school and avoid the private Chinese
schools that may be operating with fake licenses.

* Do not agree to any "reduced pay" during probationary periods which is a ruse to save money for your employer

* Never work without having a signed and sealed original contract in your hands in English before getting a plane bound for China. Make sure this contract clearly spells out everything discussed verbally about visa support, working hours, overtime pay, etc. If it is not in writing you will not get it.

For more of the truth, esepcially about pay scales and benefits, visit these links and enlighten yourself.

You should also know that any web site that peddles books, tapes, visa services, travel packages, placement assistance, etc. makes no money unless they get you to travel to China, so they will often say anything they have to, to get you there. BTW... Only 13 countries out of 87 pay less wages to foreign teachers than China. Sweden, Denmark, Qatar, Dubai, Korea all pay 40% more in slaries than China. Below is a link to a local Beijing blog where you can see what actual teachers in Beijing have to say about working there:

I think you need to divide the teaching scene in China into a few subsets.
At the top of the salary tree are the international schools catering to the expat and wealthy Chinese community. To teach here you need to be certificated and have regular teaching experience in your home country.
Besides the accommodation benefits, airfares etc you can expect in excess of 20000RMB per month.
Below this you have to make a lifestyle choice largely around how hard you want to work.
Opting for the public uni and vocational schools you will get 5500RMB per month with accom and airfare, but only have 16 to 18 contact hours pw.
Low quals and easy entry here.
Upping your hours to 30 or 40 hours pw will see you in a language school earning 15000RMB per month.
Given the profit motive and parent expectation of miraculous results, you can expect some hassles.
That said many public uni/vocational teachers do Saturday work at language schools for 100-150RMB per hour.

This was an enlightening internet visit and I am glad I found this site or I would never have known the truth about teacher salaries in China. That china scam busters.com site is amazing. I am now wondering if I should be teaching in China at all. The agents are making more money than me off of MY labor and skills!

Those agents are super slick. I almost bought into their BS. Thanks for the warning and the great link. We should send both to every teacher we know.

I just visited the link Sandra gave us (www.ChinaScamBusters.com) and hereby pledge on the life of my children that I will not work another year in China! I thought when I was screwed by Bilingo China it was some isolated case. Why do people put up with this abuse?
