MA TESOL via distance learning - worth it?

Hello everyone,

I'm a newbie here with a question. I'm thinking of making teaching a long term career choice and therefore thinking of doing an MA in TESOL. However, I want to work while I study, so I want to go for a distance learning option. I'm just wondering if my degree will be widely accepted if I get it in this way? In the long run I'd like to teach at uni level (Asia) and I'm just worried the MA won't be worth anything if I do it long distance. What do you guys think?

I would suggest first of all that you investigate the availability of MA TESOL courses, and then, above all, the cost. Bear in mind too, that even a distance course will require some on-campus presence. If the distance course is delivered by an internationally recognised university, it will of course be accepted everywhere without the slightest problem. Be aware however, of diploma mills, 'experience' degrees, and degrees offered by 'universities' with addresses in tax havens such as the Cayman Islands, and certain universities in Africa and the Middle East. For the kind of work you will be seeking, the deans and personnel departments carry out serious checks.

Thanks a lot systematic, I will definitely be careful in that regard. I have a course in mind at a uni in my home country, so I know it's legit, but I plan on doing more research and will be careful with my final decision. My main concern was if distance learning is a good option to begin with. I was wondering if perhaps potential employers would rather hire people who have completed the whole thing on-campus, but you say that's not really the case? I would obviously not want to invest two years and a lot of money into something that isn't desired in the job market. Thanks again :)

Sheffield Hallam and Nottingham University both do MA TESOL online courses. I have looked at them myself. They are both reputable and highly recognised establishments. Hallam is the cheaper course of the two at about 4,500 pounds sterling. :)
