Prospective starter career advise please.

Unread postby Joolie » Thu Jul 08, 2010 2:37 pm

Hi,
After having lived in rural Andalucía, Spain for 2 years I am thinking about starting along the road of TEFL. I have been amazed by the number of people, who advertise themselves as English teachers simply because they are native English speakers. I know that there is a demand as I have already been asked about private lessons. My target area would be young adults and children and I am unsure of which qualification to take. I have read the forums and have seen that CELTA or Trinity TESOL appear to be the best but I am unsure which of the two would be most appropriate for me. My target area would be young adults and children.
I do not have a teaching background so would be starting from scratch. I also need to take into consideration the possibility that I might want to work in a Language School in the future.

Would somebody kindly point me in the right direction.

You probably don't need a qualification for teaching one-to-one but as you clearly stated, a native speaker is not qualified to teach English just because they know the language. You have to know how to teach the language. You don't necessarily need a TEYL or Business TESOL, these are short specialist certificates you can take after a TESOL/TEFL course to practice lesson planning for children and business executives respectively. CELTA and Trinity also offer their own TEYL courses.
