Please help first timer!

Unread post by Ghuraba »

Hello,

I would like to teach my mom english. I am really not sure where or how to start. I see this website has some great information, but I do not know in which section to start. I would like to know what I need to do on each meeting so I can teach her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,

Google something like "TEFL material" and go to Carnegie Mallard University site. Then type in Beginners and you get all the teaching material you want. After Beginner, you then move to Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced.

You should start by finding out first what would be useful for you mum to know.

This is called Need Analysis. Once you know what your mum wants or need to learn in English, basically how and where she is going to use the language then you can narrow down your teaching material to make it relevant to her needs.

This ICALwiki article on Needs Analysis explains it in more detail.

Check also the ESL Activities section for useful teaching tips and ideas.
