Want to teach Medical English

Unread post by summer24 »

Hi! Need some advice-I am a medic currently based in the UK and I want to teach medical english to overseas medics.I have done this overseas on a voluntary basis but now I need qualifications to proceed further. What should I do-I have searched the net for ESP providers of Medical English courses but can only find overseas online courses-would this be ok or does anyone know of a UK based course?

Thanks-any advice would be appreciated!

Most ESP or EST courses will probably give you a good foundation in general coursework, but I have yet to see any good textbooks for teaching medical English, and people usually end up making their own materials and syllabuses anyway.

Your medical background will be invaluable, but you certainly should consider some sort of EFL/ESL training/certification to help you understand how to teach. You seem to realize this, and all I can say is keep looking, but understand my first paragraph.

Thanks-I've recently started a TESOL certificate so hopefully that should help!
