Dear Lisa23,

Here are some ideas for your concept check questions:

1. I am going to Tom's house on Saturday.

Does the speaker intend to go to Tom’s on Saturday? Answer: yes.
Has (s)he organised the visit? Answer: yes.

2. I wish I had more friends.

Does this person (or the speaker) have many friends? Answer: maybe, we can’t be sure.
Would (s)he like to have more friends? Answer: yes.
Does s(he) regret (s)he doesn’t have more friends? Answer: yes.

3. I should have talked to him.

Did the speaker talk to him? Answer: no.
Is the person sorry (s)he didn’t speak to him? Answer: yes.
Does the speaker think it would have been a good idea to talk to him? Answer: yes.

4. I am used to waking up early.

Does the speaker wake up early regularly? Answer: yes.
Is it difficult for him or her to wake up early? Answer: probably not.
Is waking up early a habit for this person? Answer: yes.

Some grammar books include “I don’t mind” in the definition of “used to doing something”. Personally, I don’t agree with this. For example: “my husband travels a lot for work, I’m used to him being away”. I think this means that I’ve adapted my life to fit the fact that my husband is often away; it doesn’t mean that I like it. This is a nuance that I would only teach at a higher level. If you want to, you can include the question: “Does (s)he mind getting up early?”

All the best,

Lucy
