Does anyone ever teach the phonemic sounds in the English language directly? - As in we sit down and practice all the sounds - and learn their inscription?
Is this more suitable for some nationalities esp. those with a different phoneme set?
So far I only ever focus on a phonemic sound when it comes up - and I never write the inscription; just tell sts. to use the Cambridge dictionary.
Thanks

Re: Teaching phonemics
Very few teachers do what you outline, but that's because very few teachers know anything about the phonemic sounds.
Telling ss to use the Cambridge/Oxford/Webster dictionary is a cop-out used by most teachers.
If you are confident to teach the sounds, I recommend that you go for it:

I don't directly address the phonemic alphabet, but I play a minimal pairs game to help students identify and distinguish between troublesome sounds.
