WHAT IS THE BEST PLACE IN CHINA FOR MY FIRST TEACHING POST??

Unread post by jonnn_ »

What do people think is the best place to teach and live in, in China, for my FIRST YEAR out as an EFL teacher?

I am attracted to Shanghai, but do not see so many jobs there and perhaps the cost of living would be too much. So I would quite like to be close by, I am looking in Suzhou and Hangzhou, but I am not sure, perhaps they are touristy?
I have also been offered a job in Wuxi, Wuhan and Shijiazhuang

I am 21 and a former art student. I think I would be more attracted to Shanghai, as I have the impression it is the "younger/more contemporary" city compared to Beijing. Am I talking rubbish?!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, its actually a really good website and will be helpful

But I cant find the blacklist/whitelist, it says to email them via 2014Updates@ChinaForeignTeachersUnion.org but I get a failure notice as if the email is incorrect. Have tried several times.. :/

I am not sure if you are aware, but I have started to find a lot of stuff to say that CFTU is nonsense. Dont know myself but.

Hi Jonn - I suggest that you try these links below as a reference. I figure if a school is on more than one list they should be avoided, but make your own decisions. Personally, I always ask to speak to another foreign teacher who has worked there more than two years and and if there are none, I move on. Also most of the people who bash and trash the CFTU are agents and recruiters that have been blacklisted or forums that allow those blacklisted agents to buy ads there, including the one you mentioned. If you send email to them make sure you send it to the.org and not the .com address or it doesn't go through. I had the same problem and I told them about it last month. Anyway, try these links for starters and good luck to you:

I guess you should also be warned that a lot of dodgy agents pose as "teaching colleagues" on-line to recruit you the sneaky way - with PMs or great recommedations they make in their posts as you can see at these two links below. That is why I like Tefl.net - no sales BS here.

As an art student you will love Beijing. There are three great art museums (National, Capital, and Bao Li Museums) and the famous 798 art district. And they also have the China Academy of Fina Arts if you want to get your MA.
