Japan VS Taiwan (first time, fresh out of uni)

Hi i am currently an undergrad at leeds about to graduate this summer. At the moment i am torn between choosing Taiwan or Japan as my TEFL destination! I am hoping to get some surf in if possible during my stay and both countries offer that. However i also understand that the market has dried up somewhat in Japan, and that i probably won't have any cash to take home after teaching for a year there (although i am more concerned with enjoying the time i spend away =]). Which countries would people recommend out of experience? Do they work you harder in Japan and is it easy to make friends there? Thanks for any help =]
