CELTA vs. Trinity TESOL

Unread post by jackiejk »

I know this has probably been asked several times before, but is there any impact/difference caused by choosing one over the other? I've searched and searched but I think I really need anecdotal evidence. Has anyone ever been turned down for a job (or think they have been turned down) due to having the Trinity cert and not the CELTA?

What about further career opportunities eg with the British Council etc? Obviously, when going for a more specialised career, you would need to possess either the DELTA or the Trinity diploma and maybe even a Masters. So, has anyone ever seen a job posting that specified the DELTA or Cambridge-related qualifications over the Diploma?

To be fair, I can't find anything myself, only one job in Hong Kong that specified a qualification for young learners like the YL add-on to the CELTA, which means that the Trinity might not be sufficient, but then can you do the YL add-on after taking the Trinity?

Honestly, I think waaaaaay too much, so any help you can give me would be fantastic!

Chains that know their TEFL like the British Council and International House accept both equally. Some schools in some places where Trinity isn't big, e.g. much of Asia, might simply not recognise the name. The kinds of schools that you'll want to work with a Diploma really should have heard of the Trinity one, so again there should be no difference.

If you do the Cambridge YL extension without spefically having a CELTA you get a slightly different certificate from the school rather than the Cambridge one, but as this cert isn't really very well known anyway and again you should be looking for good schools with extra qualifications like this isn't really shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you! It's good to know it doesn't make a difference. :)
