In the market/on the market

Unread post by Suzanna »

Hi,

The more i have been looking at this the more i am confusing myself.

" X company is one of the most respected players On the market or In the market" :?:

I know that we work IN a sector but we work ON the stock market.

Can anyone give me a ruling on it and tell me why. :?

My student is extremely advanced and challenging so i need a full proof answer if possible.

cheers,

suzanna

In the market. On the market means "for sale"

Hey Alex,

Thanks for your reply.

In the market can also mean to be looking for something aswell.

It was really with reference to In a sector but then to explain why we cannot say in the stock market and we use on. There seems to be many exceptions.

EG: Would you say there is a difference with saying.... I work in the market/I work on the market
Excluding : to be working on something (to fix a problem)
