South Korea....On a Tourist Visa?

Hi All,
Been looking through the forums, but can't find up to date info.....
I've been looking for work in Korea from the UK and have all my documents together for an E2 application.
I've now been offered a position, which sounds ideal......but the recruiter is saying that I should come to Korea on a tourist visa and then go on a visa run to get the "proper visa".
I've never been to Korea before, so I'm not just renewing or anything.
This sounds dodgy to me......any advice?
