Can anyone recommend any adult student placement tests for use in the first lesson to assertain which level of coursebook is suitable?

You could look at some course books for FCE preparation. These often have placement tests in the first chapters.

You could also take a look at the website wordskills.com. This site has placement tests for students to use. If you decide to use the website, check first of all whether the tests can be used by teachers.
