Hello from a new guy!

Unread post by mrmchoohaa »

I am at a crossroads in my life, which I am struggling to deal with, and I am very interested in meeting all of the requirements needed to teach abroad.

As my fiance is in Scotland, and I am hoping to move there, I obviously need to be aware of what they require.

I am very appreciative of any input you may have.

By the way, I only have some college credits comprising approx. one year. I am, however, attempting to earn my degree right now. I am hoping to enroll in Western Governors University.

Thank you everyone!

Hi there,

First and foremost, assuming you're American (correct me if I'm wrong), you'll need a visa if you intend to work and you will need to apply for this BEFORE arriving in the UK. Check out the Government website to find out what visas are available: https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration.

In terms of jobs, outside of short-term summer posts, the TESOL market in Scotland (and indeed in the rest of the UK) is pretty small. This is because the Government has made it much harder for foreign students to come and study. The few jobs there are tend to be snapped up by qualified and experienced teachers returning from abroad.

You haven't said where in Scotland you're moving to, but if it's not Edinburgh or Glasgow, the plan to land a TESOL job is pretty much a non-starter. If you are moving to, or close to, one of those cities, you can maximise your chances of finding work by investing in a recognised TEFL qualification such as the CELTA or the Trinity CertTESOL. Online qualifications are, for the most part, not recognised, and certainly not by the British Council, which accredits practically all language schools. It's worth taking your CELTA/CertTESOL in Scotland as aside from giving you experience teaching multilingual classes, most providers have links to local employers. To find a CELTA provider, go to http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/find-a- ... ng-centre/ and to find a CertTESOL provider see http://www.trinitycollege.com/site/?id=2093.

Hope that helps, and if you have any other questions, please ask.
