Any ideas on checking vocabulary learning?

Hi,

I'm looking for an interesting way to check vocabulary learning, rather than dictations.
I would like to ask if any of you have a suggestion about how to check whether the pupils actually studied the new vocabulary.

Thanks!

Hi Shiri,

My name is Nurit and I am an English trainee. I don't believe in dictations. in my opinion, the only way to teach vocabulary is to give the students a lot of reading tasks and speaking in class only English. In this way you can also check if the students learned the new words you taught them.

Good Luck,

Nurit.

Hi Shiri,
I was yesterday at a conference and the speaker gave a nice idea how to teach vocabulary. She is using 2 envelopes. First are all the new words in the un-known words envelop. The child has to learn them. Teacher checks the child next day. Words that he got right go to the know envelop and the rest he has to revise. So on and so on. I liked this idea very much

Hi Shiri,
In my opinion, you can try to use a reading comprehension with questions using the new vocabulary. In this way you can check their understanding of the vocabulary within a context. You can also try to use spelling games and oral activities in class. Good Luck!

Hi Shiri,

I don't know how old your students are, but if they are young, you could use a game, where one student says: "I'm thinking of a word/verb/animal/adjective (etc.), yes, yes, yes. I'm thinking of a..., guess, guess, guess". The other students then take turns guessing what the word is (from the list of words they were supposed to review): "is it...?"
The furst student then answers:"Yes it is" or "No, it isn't". When the correct word is guessed, the next student thinks of a word. It is a good way to review the vocabulary nad also to check what they remember. It is only oral, so you can't check their spelling in this game.

Hope I helped,
Tamar
