Shenyang is a rough old steel town. Never been there but I've lived in China for 3 years so I know abit about the place. It gets extremely cold in the winter and is a heavily industrial city so be prepared. BUT it's one of the best places you can live if you want to learn Chinese - they speak with the most standard accent up there in Liaoning province.
