Course Decision Query (CELTA vs. TEFL International)

Hello all,

I'm currently looking at studying a 4 week course in Spain and my initial preference was the Granada course affiliated with TEFL International.

This is based mainly on my desire to move to Granada and live there for a year or two, having recently visited and had a brilliant time there. After further research however, I can't really find many positive comments regarding the TEFL International courses in general, and the most globally recognised course appears to be the CELTA which unfortunately isn't offered in Granada.

The Granada course stipulates that the content eclipses the minimum standards suggested by the British Council which is encouraging but I can't find any independent reviews of the course from qualified teachers who have attended and gone on to successfully find jobs around the Granada area.

Obviously if I'm going to spend £1k+ I want the best for my money and I'm concerned that the Granada course may be seen as inferior to CELTA or Trinity courses by employers in Spain and around the world if I choose to move on in the future, even if the content is much the same. Is this a valid concern?

Ultimately I am flexible on where I study the course but in terms of location and where I would seek work afterwards I would strongly prefer Granada. Is it possible to provide any information or advice?

I'm planning on beginning the course in February so need to apply in the next few days so any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

J

Hi J,

I would also like to do the TEFL course in Granada but I have the same concerns as you. I've heard that the best courses to do are either the CELTA or the CertTesol. These are the most recognised but I'm unable to find a provider in Granada.

Did you take the course in Granada eventually? And if you did, would you recommend it?

I'm planning to teach English in Granada so I would like to make sure that the course I take is recognised by employers.

Would be great to hear your experiences.

Kind regards,

Dom.

Dear Dom,

I've good news for you if yo're still interested in doing a CELTA course in Granada.
Starting from April 2013, the Cambridge Platinum ESOL examination centre in Granada which is also an well established English Language school, The Institute of Modern Languages, is offering intensive 4 week CELTA courses.

If you're interested, please send me an email [EDITED - PLEASE USE PM FUNCTION RATHER THAN GIVING EMAIL ADDRESSES] I'm the D.O.S there.
All the best.

Please feel free to mention the name of the school. I managed to track down one Cambridge ESOL Platinum centre in Granada, and there was no mention of CELTA on its website.

Dear Alex,

The school is called the Institute of Modern Languages as mentioned in the original message,it is the Platinum ESOL Examination Centre which you tracked on the website.
The reason why you have not found information regarding the CELTA course on our IML website is that so far, we have only advertised locally for our 1st course in April, we contacted directors of studies of language schools on the coast and through sub centres we work with.
However, we have designed a webiste dedicated to CELTA only which will be directly linked to and from our IML website you saw.
We should launch it next week.
Thank you and have a good week.
