Any good books about TEFL and TEFL training?

Hello there,

I'm very keen to get a teaching qualification. I've done a little reading and it would seem that the Celta is the best place to start. The eventual aim is to teach in Europe or Asia-Minor. I understand that beyond that I'll need a bachelor degree.

I've come here because I'd like some advice please. I'm looking for a book with will get me started. I'm hoping it will give me a good foundation from which I can advance.

Thanks

Scott

Hi Scott,

You could start with a look at books by Jeremy Harmer. Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener is another excellent book.

In addition the Jeremy Harmer book (which I've just ordered) what else should I get?
I see the reviews of this book are good but this book is of little use as a reference.

Any other advise in getting the qualification would be very much appreciated. Thanks

You can find a complete list of CELTA providers by country here:

Once you choose one, they should be able to give you a recommended pre-reading list. Here's one example, including grammar books, which will be your other major purchase:

Took me 90 seconds to find those on Google...

One of my favorite introductory TESOL books is Practical Techniques for language teaching by Michael Lewis & Jimmie Hill. Most of Penny Ur's books are good: Discussions that Work and Grammar Practice Activities are very good.
