TEFL International - Vietnam

Hello

Normally i wouldn’t post new topics on forums, but after looking through all the posts i just wanted a bit more guidance and or help.

I am going to be partaking in a on site TEFL course in Saigon come March, now i have heard stories or read up information about not holding a degree and trying to find work.

Obviously I do not have a degree and have no teaching experience but have worked with children in the past, I am hoping to get some more information about finding work in Vietnam without this qualification, and if people have done the same?

I’m hoping to use this to get placements elsewhere in the world eventually and would that also hold a problem?

Kind regards

Darren

It's getting harder to find work without a degree. Harder, but not impossible. Certainly having any kind of TEFL qualification will help but it is by no means a guarantee of work without a degree.

In Vietnam, a degree is required for your work permit. However, not always by your employer so that means you'd like be teaching illegally.

Without a degree you're pretty well limited to places like some parts of China and Taiwan.

Thanks for your reply.

To be honest with you i am rather worried about the prospect of completing this course and then not finding any work, especially as i currently do not hold a degree.

But from what i have read it looks like its worth the risk.

Course providers know perfectly well the situation and requirements of the country where they are located.Theoretically, if the course provider is interested in more than just your money, he won't be in a hurry to tell you that you don't stand a chance of getting a job without a degree. I know of two specific instances in late 2008 where TEFL International in Thailand has not warned candidates for their courses about the degree requirement, and after passing the course, the graduates were amazed to find that they could not get a job in the country without a degree. The best thing is to do if you don't have a degree, is to do your own research first before parting with your money.
