Re: Teaching online
I can't say I read that book, but I did breeze through it in the store. It doesn't seem too interesting. Another one of those general books that doesn't have anything you couldn't think of on your own. If you are interested in teaching online, I would start researching e-learning. Start with Moodle,...

Re: Advice or info re teaching in Mexico?
Hi,
I got started teaching English in Mexico in Aguascalientes.
I could go on an on, but if you had some specific questions, I would be happy to answer them.

Re: Describing and explaining prefixes????
I certainly wouldn't get the students to memorize any prefixes as it would be a waste of time in my mind. From reading and listening they will get a feel for which is correct. Also, prefixes are commonly mistaken by native speakers, so no big worry. For example, think about how many times you have h...

Re: I will see vs I am seeing
I don't think I would say any of those three sentences. I would say, No, sorry. I am going to see Hamlet at the National Theatre. The sentence with "will" is certainly incorrect as explained in the previous post. The other two are correct, but I think future with "going to" would...

Re: mexico jobs
Looks like this is a real old post, but for anyone else interested in Mexico: I started in Mexico, and it is a very easy place to find a job. Native speakers can walk into most ESL schools and get a job. Blue eyes and blond hair? Even better. However, the money does not come close to what most ESL t...

Re: Fed Up...TEFL Online
I run a school in Canada, and I really don't have the time to worry about all the TESL schools and their advantages/disadvantages. Especially when an interview and a mock lesson will tell me most everything I need to know about a teacher anyways. One thing I will say is that the time spent in the cl...

Re: Intensive one to one adult lessons.
I would be using the newspaper. Simply reading a few articles together can help for a number of skills: Pronunciation by reading out loud. As you listen, circle the words he mispronounced. Then, go over the words and show him how to say them properly. This may lead into a lesson on certain pronunciat...

Looking for an apartment/house. Using websites to search for a place they like, practicing vocabulary such as bachelor, three bedroom, heat, hydro, etc. You may have trouble finding actual apartments in Germany with English descriptions. Here is a good site I use from Toronto: www.viewit.ca I think ...

Wow, not sure how I missed that obvious bracket you had there. Sorry about that!
As for the book, I would be more inclined to use the Internet or newspaper. I find with business, the textbooks can never be new enough. The business section of a major new website would be helpful I think.

Re: Not being native English..is it an issue?
I think the issue regarding the different grammar skills comes with native speakers with no ESL teaching experience or education. It is definitely common to find native teachers who were hired simply because they are native speakers. This is more common in countries that don't have such a focus on t...

Re: Phone Coaching for Business Execs
I don't use a textbook for telephone coaching, but my best idea was to use real phones to practice. In our school we have many phones that are connected for the staff. When I am teaching telephone skills, I always set up one student in an office with a phone and another in a different office with an...

Turn over as a phrasal verb to mean flip.
Could you turn it over? I can't read it upside down.
Turn over the glass so the water pours out.

Re: Not being native English..is it an issue?
You would have to live in an English speaking country for a while to perfect your English. The most important thing is not that you are a native speaker, but that you know the language perfectly, and you don't have a strong accent. Of course, I am thinking about teaching in Canada where my school is...

Re: English Literature in EFL classes
I just taught The Outsiders to my high school ESL class. It is short, and not so difficult to read. It wold be a good read for an FCE class. It is only about 150 pages, and is something the students can get through. It also has all the literary devices you may wish to teach, like allusion, simile, m...

Re: only or just
In your examples they are the same thing. Often only and just are the same thing. However, the difference is that just is informal and should only be used in conversation. I teach my students to never write just . Example: The new television is just for DVDs and not VHS. This is OK in conversation, ...
